New Milford to welcome autumn with Apple Festival
This time of year translates into cooler days, and is recognized as the season of foliage and all things apple.
The latter will be the focus of the upcoming fourth annual New Milford Apple Festival.
The event will be held Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the New Milford Village Green.
Attendees of all ages will discover an assortment of activities.
Festivities will kick off with the crowning of the Apple Festival king and queen, represented by members of the New Milford Senior Center.
Event offerings will include vendors, children’s games, music, kids’ contests, the sale of apple foods, and an Apple of My Eye apple bakeoff.
The majority of 70 vendors will be crafters, however, many nonprofits and a few businesses will participate.
Super Fun Inflatables will provide bounce houses, a photo booth will be on site, an Kritter Pet Kreations will be present to introduce little animals to the public.
A hula hoop competition, an egg carry race, and a donut-eating contest will round out activities for children.
On neighboring Church Street, several food trucks will serve up tasty treats, including apple churros, apple empanadas, and apple ice cream, among other fare.
For those looking to learn how apple cider is made, an old-time cider press will be on display, and apple cider will be served.
Bakeoff
Registration for the Apple of My Eye apple bakeoff is being accepted.
Those interested in participating must make a homemade dessert (pie, cake, cookies, pudding, etc.) that has apples in the recipe, and the recipe must accompany the entry.
The entry and recipe must be delivered to the bandstand on the Green Sept. 28 at 11:30 a.m. It will be followed by judging at noon.
Judges will score on originality, presentation, and taste.
Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. at the bandstand, with prizes to be presented for best apple pie, best apple dessert, and most original recipe.
