Underground Railroad: The Elijah Bostwick House

This 1781 brick house on Grove Street, one of the oldest houses in New Milford, is said to have been a safe house for fugitives from slavery before they continued north to Washington and Litchfield. Bostwick crossed the Delaware with General Washington and was a friend of Nathan Hale. His desk and other belongings and portraits of him and his family by Richard Jennys are in New Milford's Historical Society Museum.
